Once…upon a time…two very different occupants lived inside my head.
The Dreamer was always the more active one, imagining great adventures with unseen outcomes, believing in a magic that could stretch time beyond the ordinary world. The Realist, on the other hand, preferred practicality—feet on the ground, facts in a row, and tasks completed on schedule — ensuring predictable, concrete results.
For a long time, they lived on opposite sides of my mind, constantly challenging each other. The Dreamer would think of wild ideas, and the Realist would shake his head, reminding him, “That’s not possible.” The Dreamer would spin wonderful stories, and the Realist would sigh, “That’s just an escape. That’s not how the world works.”
Their differences clashed like a cold front meeting a warm front, sending electric activity across the valley between them. In that storm across my brain, things would get lively, and even the Realist had to admit — without the Dreamer, life would feel empty — like a deserted wasteland (yes, a dramatic statement for a dramatic topic).
Then, one day, something changed.
The Dreamer told the Realist about a place he liked to go. A place he could venture whenever he wanted. A place that defied time.
“It’s beyond our world,” he said, “And it feels more real there than the world you’re grounded in”. Then, he extended an invitation. “Come see for yourself. Maybe you’ll see these impossible things are more possible than you previously thought.”
The Realist hesitated, but the Dreamer promised it wouldn’t be a waste of the time the Realist held so dear. Together, they started wandering through forests of ideas, over hills of wonder, and across rivers of curiosity. The Realist noticed the sky seemed to expand a bit, and the bird songs shifted, becoming more rhythmic. As they walked, the Realist started to feel something. Whatever it was, it was affecting his breath…and his heartbeat. It wasn’t logical, factual, physical, or otherwise, but it was real, and that confused him. He never believed in what he couldn’t see. He didn’t believe in magic. But there he was, beginning to wonder why he was feeling different, and he asked, "Hey... I think I feel something. Are we getting close?" The Dreamer grinned. "Dude, we’re already here.”
Even though the Realist was on a schedule, he suggested they take a seat for a second.
The Dreamer explained, “You see, my friend, although we never physically left, our wandering led to someplace new”.
“This,” he said as he jestered around him, “is where stories thrive. Where words and images roam freely.”
The Realist looked around, and although he didn’t see anything, he knew he felt what he felt, and that made it feel like his heart was going to leap out of his chest and possibly run across the landscape with its arms in the air.

After their adventure, the Realist noticed how briefly they were gone, and that made him want to go back more often.
Nowadays, the Dreamer lives comfortably in a funky little cabin that helps him go to that place as much as possible. His home sits against a wooded area looking over a valley of possibilities. The Realist is currently building his place just across the way, facing the same valley from the opposite direction.
Sometimes, they meet for a walk. The Dreamer, buzzing with energy, can’t help but tease the Realist along the way. He grins mischievously and asks, “Maybe we should hold hands?”
The Realist looks uncomfortable in response, and this delights the Dreamer, who doubles down, “Or we could sing songs! Maybe even skip to the rhythm!”
The Realist laughs nervously. “Let’s not get carried away... at least not yet.”
For obvious reasons, they don’t do these walks all that often, but when they do, they both lose track of time while having deep discussions — silly ones, too. They sometimes get lost when the conversations get too deep or the surroundings over-stimulates the Dreamer, but they have each other and always find their way.
It’s tempting to say these two will live happily ever after, but no one knows how their story will end. They certainly will always have their disagreements and conflicts, and these days, that discomfort rarely lasts long because the Dreamer and the Realist have found their common ground — found in a not-so-far-off land of understanding.
